Most of the hydrogen produced in the United States comes from a process called steam methane reforming. Nearly 70% of this hydrogen is used in the petroleum refining industry and 20% goes into fertilizer production.

 

There are currently 1,600 miles of hydrogen pipeline (see: H2 Pipeline & transportation) in the United States and there are large hydrogen production facilities in almost every state as shown in the map.
